The Brief

Culture is Life is a not-for-profit organisation that collaborates, campaigns and activates projects to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander led solutions to affirm and strengthen culture to prevent youth suicide and to reshape our identity as Australians.

As part of a re-branding strategy they needed a new website that would allow their audience to easily engage with and discover collaborations, campaigns and projects that have been activated by Culture Is Life. This website would become a centralised hub of useful resources and also have section called Culture Squad for user-generated content by youth leaders that had been curated by Culture Is Life.

Initially the project went ahead with another web development company but Edu360 was called in to offer a second opinion after appalling results were delivered. We were completely honest with Culture Is Life and expressed our genuine concerns that the current website development project was not going to meet their important business goals.

We were just not happy that an NGO with an important mission and good heart was being taken for a ride by another company!

A month later, Culture Is Life made the decision to drop the company and approached Edu360 to take over the website development project with only a month for the build. Ignoring the tight deadlines, Edu360 jumped right in!

Our Approach

Although we kinda knew what Culture Is Life was after from earlier discussions, we decided to “re-boot” the whole specification process to dig deeper to find out what exactly they needed to achieve the business goals of the website. Using Edu360’s discovery process we identified their key business requirements, identified their target audience and researched similar NGO websites to find out what was working and what wasn’t. We then proposed a recommended visual and functional design and social media marketing strategy based on our experience working with similar organisations in the past.

This was more a matter of “what do we want the website to do for us” rather than “this is what the organisation is about”. We moved Culture Is Life away the static design developed by the previous company to something more dynamic and up to date with the current trends in web development that would instead utilise frequently updated homepage content and social media marketing to engage their youthful audience.

Some of the key features we developed included:

  • An updated visual design that perfectly matched Culture Is Life’s brand extension.
  • A frequently updating homepage that prominently featured the current marketing campaign and latest projects with beautiful photography and professional videos.
  • Engaging campaign pages that displayed a professional campaign video, high quality imagery, associated project member profiles and news updates specific to the campaign all on the same page!
  • An integrated Instagram and Twitter feed on the homepage with beautiful photography and engaging quotes that updated automatically.
  • A comprehensive resource database with a familiar Google text based search and filtering features.
  • In depth profiles of their Board Members, Staff and Culture Squad volunteers with bios and contact details.
  • An open source WordPress CMS which allowed Culture Squad volunteers to manage the website content after being trained by Edu360.

Our Solution

This was more a matter of “what do we want the website to do for us” rather than a website design with an about us statement up the front. We moved Culture Is Life away the poor static design developed by the previous company to something more dynamic and up to date with the current trends in UX/UI design that would instead utilise frequently updated homepage content and social media marketing to engage their youthful audience.

The Results

The website went live two days before the launch of an important marketing campaign and delivered fantastic results. The Culture Is Life CEO and Staff mentioned that they received nothing but amazing compliments from their stakeholders and audience. The media found the campaign pages extremely useful as they were loaded with heaps of campaign specific content. Their audience loved the resources. The Culture Squad enjoyed the staff profiles and have been using this to build new connection and initiate potential collaborative projects. The social media strategy has been a blast! Culture Is Life is not very effectively using Instagram and Twitter to engage with their audience. Finally, Culture Is Life now have a modern, mobile responsive and engaging website that they even can update on their own in-house.
